2018 Sphinx Virtuosi National Tour

DETROIT, August 28, 2018: JPMorgan Chase & Co. has partnered with the Sphinx Organization, the national social justice nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts, as the lead corporate underwriter of the 2018 Sphinx Virtuosi national tour.

The Sphinx Virtuosi is a professional chamber orchestra comprised of 18 of the nation’s top Black and Latino classical soloists, all alumni of the Sphinx Competition for young Black and Latino string players. This self-conducted ensemble has toured the country for the past sixteen years, acting as cultural ambassadors to reach new and diverse audiences, and first debuted at Carnegie Hall in December 2004 thanks to the support of JPMorgan Chase & Co. “The arts bring people together and have the power to unite communities,” said Tynnetta McIntosh, Managing Director and head of Corporate Firmwide Employee Communications at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Chair of the Sphinx Board of Directors. “JPMorgan Chase is delighted to once again underwrite the 2018 Sphinx Virtuosi National Tour, honoring our commitment to diversity and creating opportunities for young black and Latino string musicians.”

The 2018 tour will feature a new program entitled Music Without Borders, illuminating works by composers from communities searching for harmony and separated by time, distance, hardship and conflict. The tour will include works by Emmy nominated Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom, Dmitri Shostakovich, Gaspar Cassadó, and features a newly commissioned work by Grammy Award-winning jazz trumpeter and composer, Terence Blanchard.

The tour will bring the Sphinx Virtuosi to Carnegie Hall for a performance and formal gala, taking place on Thursday, Oct. 11th. The national tour runs from Sept. 30th to Oct. 28th and includes stops in Detroit, Cleveland, Flint, New York City, Washington DC, Miami, and more.

Sphinx is lead by President and Artistic Director Afa S. Dworkin, who has served in various leadership roles since Sphinx’s inception and has been recognized as one of 30 classical music influencers in the country by Musical America as well as one of Crain’s 40 Under 40 leaders. "We are deeply grateful to JPMorgan Chase & Co. for making the Sphinx Virtuosi tour possible, thanks in large part to the amazing advocacy and leadership of Sphinx's Board Chair, Tynnetta McIntosh. This underwriting support brings the tour to life, and the incredible visibility that comes from partnering with such an institution allows us to expand our reach to bring this dynamic concert experience to thousands of audience and community members around the country."
