GRCC hosts Community Science Day, Nov. 18

GRAND
RAPIDS: Families can explore robotics, light and color, and DNA during Grand Rapids Community College's Community Science Day on Nov. 18, 2017.

The day of free interactive science- and health-related activities runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Calkins Science Center, 226 Bostwick Ave. NE, and Cook Hall, 143 Bostwick. Most activities are open to all ages, and the first 200 participants will receive a free pass for the GRCC parking ramps.

Students, staff and faculty from GRCC's biological sciences, physical sciences, exercise science, dental assisting, nursing, radiologic technology, occupational therapy assisting, Academic Support and tutoring programs have organized the event, which is funded through a Grand Rapids Community College Foundation grant.

Leigh Kleinert, anatomy and physiology professor said the activities are just as rewarding for the GRCC students who volunteer as they are for the community.

"Our students look forward to Community Science Day for hands-on learning opportunities," she said. "Community members come away with a positive experience involving science while exploring what GRCC offers in science- and health-related fields."

Community Science Day activities include:

_Rocks Rock! -- Participants can play with the geology lab's augmented reality sandbox, change the landscape with a stream table, and make the seismometer "jump."

_Come Meet Max! -- See how nursing students learn to palpate pulses, take blood pressure readings, and listen to a beating heart by using Max, a mannequin that blinks, breathes and talks.
_Whoooo Could It Be? -- Dissect an owl pellet and figure out its last meal.
_Make Your Own Slime! -- Make bouncy, stretchy, moldable slime while learning about polymers.

Blandford Nature Center and John Ball Zoo will lead some activities, and the Kent County Health Department will answer questions about immunizations. Participants in the "Discover Nutrition" sessions will have a chance to help Kids' Food Basket.
