Toledo International Youth Orchestra performs at fundraiser to benefit victims of Earthquake in Ecuador

The Toledo International Youth Orchestra (TIYO) performed at a fundraising dinner at First Unitarian Church on May 17, 2016, to benefit families impacted by the earthquake that shook Ecuador on April 16. All proceeds benefit the church’s Ecuador Earthquake Fund.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake left at least 659 people dead, 27,732 people injured and thousands homeless in the regions of Manta, Pedernales, and Portoviejo.

TIYO is planning a trip to Ecuador June 6, but will not be traveling to the impacted regions. TIYO originally planned to travel to Cuba in June, but cancelled the trip when the Cuban government declined to issue performance visas to the musicians, in time for a June sojourn.
Colette Córdova is a member of the church and is organizing the event. Her father, Carlos Córdova, immigrated to northwest Ohio in 1940s from Cuenca, Ecuador. The Córdova family knows several people impacted.

“I have aunts and cousins who are giving me firsthand accounts as to the needs,” said Ms. Córdova. “Some people evacuated with the Tsunami warning; many have nowhere to go. 90 percent of the homes in the on the epicenter have been flattened. I felt we had to do something.”

Additionally, these Mexican restaurants will donate 15 percent of their proceeds to the earthquake fund on the following dates: Mi Hacienda, 3302 Glanzman Road, on Monday, May 23; La Fiesta, 1406 S. Reynolds Rd., on Tuesday, June 7.
