Toledo Community Foundation announces Gómez as recipient of Buckeye CableSystem/Telemundo scholarship


April 14, 2015: The Board of Trustees of Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. has announced that Javier Ramón Gómez of Toledo, OH is the recipient of a $1,500 Buckeye CableSystem/Telemundo Scholarship.


This scholarship provides an annual, one-time award for graduating high school students of Latino heritage who are permanent residents of Buckeye CableSystem’s Toledo service area to attend an accredited post-secondary institution of their choice.

Gómez graduates in May from St. Francis de Sales High School and will attend the University of Toledo this fall where he plans to major in electrical engineering.


While in high school, Gómez participated in LASSO, the school’s Hispanic Club, was a Mock Trial team member, and played soccer, tennis and basketball.  His volunteer opportunities include being a Summer Youth Employee for the Believe Center (former Aurora González Center), and St. Luke’s Hospital, and he worked with Sofia Quintero Arts & Cultural Center and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC).   


This scholarship was established by Buckeye CableSystem and Telemundo, one of the Spanish-language networks carried on Buckeye. Scholarship applicants are required to have a

minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and submit an essay addressing the theme “I’m Proud to be a Latino in Ohio.” 


Application for the Buckeye CableSystem/Telemundo Scholarship of the Toledo Community Foundation is administered online at www.toledocf.org.  Applications for the 2016-2017 academic year will be available in December. Scholarship awards are announced in April.
