“10th Anniversary” ROBERTO OCASIO LATIN JAZZ MUSIC CAMP, June 22-28

The Roberto Ocasio Foundation has announced that student enrollment is continuing until June 8th, 2014 for its “10th Anniversary” Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Music Camp, June 22-28, at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland under the leadership of Artistic Director/Artist-In-Residence, Bobby Sanabría, world-renowned Latin jazz drummer/percussionist, composer, bandleader, and music educator.
 

Also, world-acclaimed composer, conductor, and multi-instrumentalist David Amram is the Camp’s special-guest lecturer and artist.

The one-of-a-kind resident camp is for music students in grades 8-12 (including 2014 graduates), all instruments--percussion (including Afro-Cuban and Brazilian), drum set, brass, woodwinds, piano, and all other instruments.

Embodying both the culture and the music, the Camp emphasizes the Latin side of the jazz continuum, using a specialized curriculum and setting, dealing not only with performing the music but also its history and relationship to jazz and all other forms of US-American popular music.

“Every public school, college music, social studies, and history department and every conservatory should have a course on this music and history,” says Amram. “CLEVELAND DOES, so I am happy and honored to be a part of this great Camp. The soulful, SOPHISTICATED, spiritual brilliant music that these artists who created what we call Latin Jazz has a long and distinguished history, and a new generation is adding to the music today!”

Covered are the technical aspects of playing, composition, and improvisation in the various styles in Latin jazz as well as analysis of Latin American rhythms (in particular, la clave).

The week includes group and individual instruction, rehearsals, music presentations and activities, combo performing, Latin dance, field trips, and a component for studying Puerto Rican cuatro and Cuban tres guitars with noted Cleveland cuatrista, Frank López.

“10th Anniversary” events of Saturday, June 28th, to be declared by the City of Cleveland as “Roberto Ocasio Day,” and will include an afternoon celebration of free music and entertainment at Market Square Park (W. 25th & Lorain), followed by the Camp’s Anniversary Recital Concert—FREE and open to the public at 7pm, St. Ignatius Breen Center for the Performing Arts (1911 W. 30th).

The Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, and Sanabria’s residency is made possible in part by LP (Latin Percussion), Remo, Sabian, Tama, and Vic Firth.
