TEEN ADVISORY BOARD: Help make Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library even better.  Sixth through 12th-graders, join Teen Advisory Board and plan and volunteer at various fun activities in the library and community throughout the year.  Check it out at the next meeting on Monday, Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m.  Preregistration is required and is available online at LorainPublicLibrary.org or by calling the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 449.  The Main Library is located at 351 W. eMEDIA: The eLibrary on Lorain Public Library System’s website is growing.  Learn about all of the electronic media available through LorainPublicLibrary.org.  From eBooks to music, audiobooks to magazines, you can take advantage of this impressive collection, all for free with a Lorain Public Library System library card.  Find out more at eMedia class at the Main Library on Monday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.  Preregistration is required and is available online at LorainPublicLibrary.org or by calling the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 450.

STORY TIMES: Now is the time to sign up for story time at Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library.  Story time provides the building blocks of early literacy.  Children learn sounds, letters, words and stories, while interacting with other children their age.  Plus it’s fun!  A new session is just starting and there are a handful of different sessions to choose from.  For more information and to preregister, visit LorainPublicLibrary.org or call the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 449.

EXCEL FOR BEGINNERS: Learn the basics of Microsoft Office Excel 2007 at Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.  Learn how to set up a spreadsheet workbook, input data, compose simple formulas, and choose layout and print format options.  A limited amount of hands-on practice time will be available.  Participants need to be comfortable using a mouse to attend.  Preregistration is required and is available online at LorainPublicLibrary.org or by calling the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 450.

TED JACOBS BOOK SIGNING: “It’s Up To You!  Change Your Attitude, Change Your Life” – at least that’s what local business owner Ted Jacobs believes.  Jacobs will be at Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library on Thursday, Jan. 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. to sign his book.  Copies of his book will be available for purchase.  This event is cosponsored by the Friends of the Lorain Public Library, Inc.  For more information, call the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 450.

THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT AND YOU: Learn to navigate the new Health Insurance Marketplace at Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.  A certified broker for individuals and small businesses will be at the library to discuss the Affordable Care Act.  How do you shop for health insurance?  What are the benefits?  What are the penalties if you don’t buy insurance?  These questions will be answered and many more at the program.  Preregistration is required and is available online at LorainPublicLibrary.org or by calling the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 450.

HOT MOVIES: Place a hold on one of these great movies at the Lorain Public Library System.  Topping Publishers Weekly best-seller list is “Don Jon,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson.  “2 Guns” is up next on the list, starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg.  Third on the list is “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,” based on the publishing phenomenon of a young demigod’s epic journey to fulfill his destiny.  Drop by, call or visit LorainPublicLibrary.org today.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Celebrate Avon’s Bicentennial at the Avon Branch Library

The city of Avon is celebrating a milestone. 2014 marks the city’s 200th anniversary. In honor of Avon’s bicentennial, Lorain Public Library System’s Avon Branch is hosting a Bicentennial Local History Series this winter.

Explore Avon’s ancient history, its early people and artifacts on Jan. 21, 2014. Travel back to 1814 when Avon was first settled and learn about the daily life on Feb. 11. Discover the people who helped Avon become the thriving city it is today on March 18.
