Join Ohio Fair Food and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers calling on Wendy’s to join the Fair Food Program, Dec. 16

Columbus OH: According to Columbus activist Rubén Castilla Herrera, “After a twenty year worker-led struggle, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (an internationally acclaimed farmworker organization based in Florida) has won dramatic advances in fields that have long been mired in sub-poverty wages, rampant wage theft, sexual assault, and --in extreme cases—modern-day slavery.

“After successfully pressuring 11 major corporate retailers to join the Fair Food Program, they’ve won the first wage increase for tomato pickers in over 30 years, dignity in the workplace, and freedom from violence, sexual harassment, and slavery for 100,000 workers.

“Of the five largest fast food chains in the U.S.—McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s—Wendy’s is the only one not participating in the Fair Food Program.

“On December 16, 2013, as Wendy’s opens a modernized flagship restaurant next to their headquarters, a tribute to Dave Thomas, join us in calling on Wendy’s to live up to Thomas’s founding values, such as ‘treat people with respect’ and ‘do the right thing.’

“Timed with the ribbon-cutting ceremony, farmworkers and their Ohio allies will deliver a petition to the Wendy’s headquarters signed by over 100,000 consumers nationwide and ask Wendy’s executives, what does modernizing mean to Wendy’s?  Procuring flat screen TV’s for their stores, or treating farmworkers with respect?”
