Teacher Workshop to be held at Cleveland Public Library

Cleveland: Through collaboration with the Ohio Center for the Book, the first teacher workshop for the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, 1962 Stokes Boulevard, Cleveland, Ohio.

The Ohio Arts Council is currently accepting registrations for the 2013-14 Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest. High Schools all across Ohio are encouraged to participate in the ninth annual Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest by using the online registration page on the Ohio Arts Council web page. Deadline for registering is November 29, 2013.

Teachers who want to learn more about the program are invited to attend this Poetry Out Loud teacher workshop. Cleveland poet, Katie Daley, will be one of the workshop leaders helping to prepare teachers to make the most of Poetry Out Loud in their classrooms. Teachers interested in attending should contact Pat Shannon, Ohio’s Poetry Out Loud coordinator at 614-728-4481 or pol.contractor@oac.state.oh.us.

Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest for students in 9th-12th grades that began in 2004 and continues to build on the resurgence of poetry as an art form. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud inspires students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and recitation.

School champions will converge in Columbus on March 8, 2014, to represent their school at the State finals and vie for the honor to represent Ohio at the National Finals. The Ohio champion receives $300 and an all-expenses-paid trip (with an adult chaperone) to Washington, DC, to compete at the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest, April 28-30, 2014.
