CPL welcomes Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA
Cleveland Public Library (CPL) will welcome RZA, founder
and mastermind of the seminal hip-hop collective the Wu-Tang
Clan, on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in the Louis
Stokes Wing Auditorium on East 6th Street and
Superior Avenue. Youth advocate, Basheer Jones, will moderate
RZA (Robert Fitzgerald Diggs)
“Each year, CPL’s Writers and Readers series introduces
Clevelanders to a diverse group of fascinating writers, and RZA
is a perfect example,” said Felton Thomas, Director of CPL.
“Many may only know him for his musical accomplishments, but his
skills go well beyond beats, and his writing well beyond lyrics.
We expect a packed house to hear his talk.”
Since the release of The Wu-Tang Clan’s first album 20 years
ago, RZA (Robert Fitzgerald Diggs) has been an influential
leader in the music world, performing and producing works that
took rap and hip-hop culture in revolutionary directions. RZA’s
musical efforts extend well beyond the Wu-Tang universe,
creating scores for numerous films such as Quentin Tarantino’s
Kill Bill and producing the work of artists as diverse as
Kanye West and The Black Keys.
In addition to music, RZA is a skilled actor, film director,
martial artist, chess master, and philosopher. He is also an
accomplished writer, authoring screenplays, poetry, and two
books of philosophy, The Wu-Tang Manual and The Tao of
Wu, in which he explains his seven “Pillars of Wisdom,”
representing seven “key turning points in his life.” One of his
most recent works was writing the screenplay for his motion
picture directorial debut, The Man with the Iron Fists,
in which he stars alongside Russell Crowe.
RZA’s talk at CPL is free and open to the public, with seating
available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 300
people will receive a free copy of The Tao of Wu.
