Dear Community Leaders:
It is with a great deal of sentiment that I write you this note
to inform you that I have submitted my resignation from the
Cleveland Board of Education effective December 31, 2012 due to
developments in my own professional and personal life.
I
would like foremost to thank you as a community for your
collaboration on different topics during my service on this
board. I have learned a lot in the past four years and will
forever be an advocate on education issues affecting our kids.
This board commitment is a very important one and one of the
most impactful ones in our community. In the last four years I
have worked to advocate for:
(1) accountability from the district - from the CEO, the
principals, teachers and staff,
(2) equal allocation of resources and staff to English-language
learners,
(3) targeting the graduation rate of our Hispanic/Latino youth,
as well as
(4) special attention to our neighborhood schools.
In addition, there have been a lot of forward-looking changes in
management and policies, both institutional and legislative in
nature, that coupled with the support from our residents with
the passage of Issue 107 have now have set in motion the
conditions needed to produce meaningful impacts in our
classrooms.
Therefore, it is up to us as a community to embrace the positive
circumstances and help identify someone to carry the torch in
the coming years and continue the work needed for CMSD to
implement The Cleveland Plan 4-Year Strategy.
The Mayor's office will be opening up the appointment process to
select a new member for the BOE at the beginning of next year.
If you have questions about the role, please reach out to me and
I will be happy to provide guidance on current issues that the
CMSD is facing.
