Dayton considers
whether to woo immigrants
DAYTON, Sept. 22, 2011 (AP): A shrinking Ohio city is
considering whether to actively woo immigrants to help rebuild
its population.
The Dayton Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/oGPx06
) that what's called the ``Welcome Dayton Plan'' would portray
the city as immigrant-friendly. The plan could lead to a new
``international marketplace'' in Dayton and a new city
identification card for residents who can't get a driver's
license or a state ID.
Dayton Human Relations Director Tom Wahlrab says the city can
either welcome immigrants or let old stereotypes and fears
hinder its success.
The City Commission is scheduled to vote next week on the plan,
which is supported by City Manager Tim Riordan. He says research
shows immigrants are more likely to be entrepreneurs.
The 2010 census put Dayton's population at about 142,000, the
lowest since 1920.

población va en declive está considerando atraer activamente a
inmigrantes para lidiar con el problema.
El
diario Dayton Daily News reporta que el llamado ``Welcome Dayton
Plan'' mostraría a la ciudad como acogedora de inmigrantes. El plan
podría llevar a un nuevo ``mercado internacional'' en Dayton y a una
nueva tarjeta municipal de identificación para residentes que no
puedan obtener licencia de conducir o identificación estatal.
El
director de Relaciones Humanas de Dayton Tom Wahlrab dijo que la
municipalidad puede acoger a los inmigrantes o permitir que viejos
estereotipos y temores obstaculicen su progreso.
La
Comisión Municipal tiene programado votar la próxima semana sobre el
plan, que tiene el respaldo del administrador Tim Riordan. Riordan
dice que estudios muestra que los inmigrantes tienen una mayor
tendencia a iniciar negocios.
El
censo del 2010 dice que la población de Dayton es de 142.000, la más
baja desde 1920.
