Cesar Chavez Academy
students learn violin from Wayne State University
July 7, 2011: An innovative program designed to introduce a
larger number of Latina/o youth to violin in Southwest Detroit
was launched this summer at Cesar Chavez Academy (Martin
Street campus).
The program is called Academic Learning and Strings or “ALAS,”
eaning “wings” in Spanish. The resources and expertise of
Wayne State University’s Strings Project @ Wayne help
students learn the importance of music and education. Two
senior-year WSU students teach 40 Cesar Chavez students, grades
3-5, in four sessions about the rudimentary concepts of string
music, instrument care and theory.
ALAS teacher, Maritza Garibay-Figueroa, says that
students in her classes “bring excitement, passion and love for
string music.”
The program is funded through the generosity of the Detroit
International Bridge Company and Saginaw Valley State
University’s Partnership Office.
