The two-story building will have nine classrooms on the main
floor. A music room and cafeteria will be housed on the second
floor. The new location also features a separate gymnasium that
will be used for physical education
classes five days a week as well as athletic
competitions.
Mr. Baker said that the building previously housed a commercial
business. The interior was completely gutted and reconfigured
to accommodate the school. “The classrooms are larger to
accommodate our growing student
enrollment, and each will have the latest technology,
including Smartboards and projectors,” he said. “It also will
support our plan to offer classes for students entering fifth
grade beginning next school year.”
Mr. Baker also announced that the school was awarded a $200,000
grant from the Ohio Department of Education in recognition of
the school’s increased enrollment, rising student achievement
scores and satisfactory performance on district efficiency
ratings.
“The grant was totally unexpected,” Mr. Baker said. “The state
recognized The Knight Academy as a
model charter school because of the hard work of our
board, faculty, staff, students and parents.” The funds will be
used to help boost student performance on math and
language arts tests, and
implement programs to aid student retention and dropout
prevention.
The academy will celebrate its move to the new building with a
ribbon cutting ceremony and
open house on Thursday, January 28.
The Knight Academy offers advanced courses in science, language
and technology, as well as an extended
school day and school year. Its mission is to provide a
superior educational experience focusing on academic
preparation, and character and physical development.
