Issue 6
passage reshapes Cuyahoga County
On Tuesday,
November 3, 2009, Cuyahoga County voters resoundingly voted in
favor of government reform and a county charter form of
government. Approximately 68 percent of the voters supported
the initiative, and it passed in all cities in Cuyahoga County. |

At the victory celebration at The Harp, 4408 Detroit
Avenue, Mayor of Parma Heights, Marty Zanotti, one of the
co-chairs of the initiative, commented on the importance of the
endorsement of the Hispanic Roundtable to the effort. He
observed that it came at a critical time, was one of the most
important endorsements received by the campaign, and helped
change the dynamics of the race. “It was a significant part of
the victory,” according to Zanotti.
State Senator
Nina Turner, a co-chair, was also effusive in her
recognition and praise of the Latino community for their support
during the campaign.
One of the
co-chairs of the effort was José C. Feliciano, Chairman
of the Hispanic Roundtable. Mr. Feliciano stated, “This is a
historic moment not only for Cuyahoga County but also for the
Hispanic community. It presents a historic opportunity for
all!” Mr. Feliciano anticipates recruiting a Latino candidate
for District 3, which is composed of 20 percent Latinos.
The charter form
of government will elect a county-wide executive, as well as an
eleven-member council.
Mr. Feliciano
observed that the Latino community will be in on the ground
floor helping to form that government. The election for the
county executive and the council will be September, 2010.
