Holiday Gift Show at Flatlanders
Dec. 3, 2008:
Flatlanders Art Galleries
hosts a Holiday Gift Show, free and open to the
public through Jan. 3, 2009. The exhibition includes artwork
from many area artists suitable for the gift-giving season.
The galleries, located in Blissfield MI, will be hosting a
weekend Holiday Open House on Dec. 6th – 7th.
As an incentive to gallery visitors during the Holiday Open
House, ceramist James Freeman
will be offering our guests a pottery-throwing demonstration,
along with a molten-metal pour by resident artist Ken Thompson.
Demonstrations will run from 2:00 to 4:00pm each day of the open
houses.
Holiday Gift Show
includes: sculptural ceramics by artist Freeman;
glass sculptures and vessels by
artist Mary Ellen Graham; and ceramic items like mugs,
platters, and bowls by artist John Leyland. Leyland
produces large, hand-built, sculptural forms based on Neolithic
artifacts and minimalist geometry. While exhibiting sculpture he
continues to make pots. Since receiving his Masters degree John
has taught at Miami University
and at Adrian College in
Adrian, Michigan. He is
currently the Ceramics Studio Coordinator for the
University of Michigan in Ann
Arbor, Michigan, and an adjunct instructor at the
College for Creative Studies in
Detroit, Michigan.
Also, color reduction relief prints
by Tom Rudd & Margo McCafferty. This husband and wife
team makes art in a small town in the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan state. A sculptor and a
painter respectively, Tom and Margo create work informed by
their wooded surroundings with frequent reference to the
omnipresent environmental crisis, especially as it relates to
the quality of water. And sculptures in aluminum, bronze, stone,
by Kenneth M. Thompson.
