UT Cancer
Center to host ‘Oncology on Canvas’ exhibit
The University of Toledo Cancer Center hosts the art exhibit
titled “Oncology on Canvas,” which will be on display on
the fourth floor of Mulford Library on the Health Science Canvas
from Monday, May 5, at 9 a.m.
until
noon
Thursday, May 8, 2008.
The Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey Art
Competition and Exhibition was developed by Eli Lilly and Co. in
2004 as a way to honor the journeys people embark upon when
confronted with a cancer diagnosis.
The art for this international exhibit is submitted by people who
have been diagnosed with cancer, their oncologists, nurses, family
members and caregivers, allowing them to share their cancer
experience with the world through their works. |

Each piece is accompanied by a narrative that describes the
inspiration behind the art.
This is the second year the UT Cancer Center has hosted the
exhibit. Kathy McVicker, volunteer at the UT Cancer Center, said,
“Last year’s exhibit was pretty incredible and very touching.”
Special events during the week will include:

• Monday, May 5, at
7 p.m. in Mulford Library Café — “Art as Therapy” presented by
Claudia W. St. Clair, art therapist, Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
• Tuesday, May 6, at 6 p.m. in Mulford Library Café — Oncology
Nurses of Northwest Ohio will
discuss research on art as therapy.
• Thursday, May 8, at 6 p.m. in the Ruppert Health Center — “My
Art … My Life,” presented by muralist Beth Covert. She will talk
about her cancer journey; a panel discussion by cancer patients
will follow. |

Covert is a muralist who was diagnosed with breast cancer two
years ago and after having surgery, chemotherapy and radiation,
she did not have the strength to paint. So she picked up her
camera and started taking photos.
“I get lost in my work. I become totally absorbed and lose all
awareness of the time, surroundings and most importantly, the
difficulties in my own life. That is the gift my art gave me
throughout the treatment of cancer in 2006,” Covert said.

A total of 25 pieces of artwork will be displayed in the Mulford
Library throughout the week.
Artwork will be judged and the top three prizewinners will receive
monetary contributions that will be donated to the artist's cancer
charity of choice.
