Rogers
scores twice in Crew’s 4-3 victory over Chivas USA
COLUMBUS,
April 12, 2008 (AP): Robbie Rogers scored to lead the Columbus
Crew in a 4-3 victory over Chivas
USA
on Saturday night in a game marked by two ejections, eight yellow
cards and faltering stadium lights.
Guillermo
Barros Schelotto scored on a penalty kick for the Crew (2-1-0) and
set up goals for Alejandro Moreno and Rogers.
Referee
Ricardo Salazar signaled for the penalty kick after Moreno was
brought down in the penalty area by Chivas defender Jim Curtin in
the 25th minute. Schelotto sent goalkeeper Brad Guzan the wrong
way in converting the penalty for his first goal of the season.
Sacha
Kljestan, Jesse Marsch and Paulo Nagamura scored for Chivas
(1-1-1).
Kljestan
tied the game in the 33rd minute, bending a 19-yard shot past Crew
goalkeeper Will Hesmer and inside the right post for his second
goal of the year.
Moreno
regained the lead for the Crew in the 35th minute with his second
score of the season. Columbus took a 3-1 lead in the 71st minute
when Schelotto rolled a long pass from midfield that left Rogers
alone with Guzan inside the penalty area for his first goal of the
night.
The Crew
saw its lead evaporate in the span of 6 minutes, when Marsch
scored in the 72nd and Nagamura in the 78th.
Rogers gave
the Crew its second win of the season when his 18-yard shot was
fumbled by Guzan and rolled across the goal line in the 82nd
minute.
Chivas
midfielder Francisco Mendoza received a yellow card for a rough
tackle in the 13th minute and ejected for a second yellow card in
the 83rd. Kljestan was ejected for serious foul play one minute
later.
They were
joined in Salazar's book by Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven after
Gaven dragged down defender Jonathan Bornstein in the 22nd minute.
Bornstein was booked in the 37th minute, as was Chivas captain
Marsch in the 68th. Crew midfielder Adam Moffat was carded for a
rough tackle in first half stoppage time, and Schelotto was carded
at the end of the game for interfering with a free kick.
Banks of
lights in the northeast and northwest corners of the stadium went
dark in the 16th and 17th minutes, causing play to be suspended
briefly. Both teams agreed to continue under reduced lighting, and
the banks were relit moments later, only to fail again early in
the second half.
