Congratulations to Sergio Antonio Rios for his graduation from Whitmer High School on June 2, 2007. Sergio plans on attending the University of Toledo, majoring in business/marketing. Sergio is the son of Betty Rios and Tony Rios and the brother of Nikayla Rios. Sergio is also the tio of Omar Hernández. 

   

Puerto Rican Home Club of Lorain, Ohio celebrated its 50th year with a Ms. Chiquitita/Reina contest on May 6, 2007.      St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center celebrated the Grand Opening of its Regional & Vascular Center on May 20, 2007 in Toledo.

Two hot spots in Adrian include Veronica’s Market on Beecher Street and Fiesta Ranchera Restaurant, off of route 223, adjacent to Wal-Mart.

Veronica’s Market offers a variety of Mexican grocery products and is a sensational supermercado mexicano. Fiesta Ranchera Restaurant offers a complete menu of comida mexicana. In the photo below Señor Lee greets its patrons.

   

    

The Mexican Consulate (Detroit office) was at Adelante, Inc. last Saturday, May 12, 2007, assisting Mexican nationals to obtain passports and identification. HBA’s Ricardo Guilfu, Sister Alicia Alvarado, La Prensa’s Rubén Torres, and Cleveland Councilman Joe Santiago at last week’s Grand Opening of Popeyes’ located at 2905 Clark Avenue, near West 25th Avenue, listening to Mariachi Joya de México.

The painted steel sculpture by Bob García was installed 4-30-07 along with 10 other artists’ works at a sculpture park in the Village of Ottawa Hills, adjacent to the University of Toledo. The brightly colored work entitled The Conversation in intended to invite viewers to walk into its soothing interior and perhaps sit down, stay awhile, contemplate, talk, and sing if so inclined. A slight echo can be heard inside the pod-like structure.

   

Ramiro and Erminia (née Sifuentes) Alvarez were married on April 21, 1957
in Raymondville, Texas.
In the 1960s they moved to Toledo and raised their family of 7 children. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at one of their son’s homes. Felicidades!

LAKE BUENA VISTA: The Lorain Admiral King High School “Marching Admirals” marched down Main Street, U.S.A. at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, on Monday April 1, 2007. The band traveled to Disney from Lorain, Ohio to take part in Disney Magic Music Days and perform for an international audience of Theme Park guests at Magic Kingdom Park.

Cold Weather Won’t Stop a Frog at an Egg Hunt!

Despite the cold temperatures over 70 “First Mates” club members participated in Bay Area Credit Union’s 15th annual Egg Hunt last week. “First Mates” is a savings incentive program for youth 11 years and under. Bay Area’s savings mascot, Boomer-the-Frog joined club members at Pearson Park to hunt for over 1200 candy-filled eggs. Giant chocolate bunnies were awarded to those who found special extra large eggs. A grand prize “Boomer Basket” was presented to a lucky winner at the end of the event.

Over 2000 Latinos were at Fiesta Latina last Saturday, March 24, 2007, for the Frankie Negrón Concert and children’s entertainment, hosted by the Julía De Burgos Cultural Arts Center at the I-X Amusement Park. Proceeds for Fiesta Latina assist in the deliverance of programming to the Latino community of Metro Cleveland. March 19, 2007 marked the 4th year anniversary of the Bush II invasion of Iraq. Demonstrations abounded throughout the globe including the placement of 3,700 wooden tombstones in front of the Lucas County Courthouse, placed by the Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition, in an exhibition entitled : “Arlington Midwest: The Human Cost of War.” Notable Quotes:

• Iraq is like being in quicksand—the more you struggle, the deeper you sink.

• Why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?

   

Anita López was sworn in as the Lucas County Auditor on March 8, 2007 at the Mayores Senior Center in Toledo, by Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Charles J. Doneghy, with attorney López’s oldest son holding the family bible belonging to the late Judge Joseph A. Flores. A reception followed at Lido Lanes.

Latino Student Union meets at Owens Community College: On March 9th, the Latino Student Union from Owens Community College met to continue with their planning for the future. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on February 27, 2007, with Oregon Mayor Marge Brown taking the honors of recognizing the grand opening of El Camino Sky restaurant, located at 2072 Woodville Road, Oregon, Ohio. Mary Flores Ward assists in the ribbon cutting. Elected were: John Aguirre (Pres.), Ray García (Trustee), Gasper Herrera (Vice Pres.), Rich Atwater (Sgt. at Arms), Felipe Acosta (Trustee), Joe Carmona (Cantina Manager); Mary García (Recording Sec.), Carmen Barbosa (Trustee), Lupe Guzmán (Treas.), Mary Stamper (Membership), Linette Kulczak (Hall), and Dora Parker (Corresponding Sec.). At the top right is Dr. Steven Steel, Vice President of the Toledo School Board, who swore in the officers, committee chairs, and trustees.
