Our family would love to honor our son with his 12th birthday announcement in La Prensa. Vincent Vargas Jr. was born December 28, 1995 to Vincent Sr. and Joan Vargas. He is a member of the professional folkloric dance group El Corazón de México, he attends Blessed Sacrament Church, and Vincent plays baseball and basketball. He is a student at Hiawatha Elementary and is a member of the orchestra playing the bass.

Vincent Jr. is the grandson of Ray, Blaise Vargas & Medford, Phyllis (belated) Krieger. He has two sisters, Kathleen & Cassandra. Vincent Jr. is very sentimental and offers greatness to the world with his fun loving spirit. He loves Mexican dance and loves to see everyone smiling. We love him very much. HAPPY BIRTHDAY “Bud”!

For many years Steve and Mary DeHoyos, of Genoa, Ohio, sold tapes primarily of Tejano releases throughout Ohio and Michigan. In this 1990 La Prensa photo, Steve and Mary are selling their latest musical releases at a flea market on State Route 20, near Woodville, Ohio.

El Corázon de México performed at St. Martin de Porres’s Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration, followed by a performance at Rosary Cathedral on Dec. 15. This Toledo-based folkoric dance group travels to Disney World on Dec. 26, 2007 to perform.

Wally Rodela has been a firefighter for the City of Toledo for over thirty years. This photo was taken at La Prensa’s Midwest Tejano Music Awards Festival in 1995 in downtown Toledo. Wally is also an avid golfer.

Toledo: The Northwest Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted its second job fair on Oct. 5, 2007, entitled “Hispanic Business Expo and Job Fair - ¡Explosión II!”

The job fair was held at the Hilton Convention Center.

Mrs. Kim Grilliot, Principal of Notre Dame Academy, announced that Seniors, Nadine Ajaka, Shannon Desmond, and Monica Guisfredi have been named Commended Students in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2008 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2008 competition by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Latins United/Latinos Unidos purchased for 5 consecutive years the largest block of tickets for Latino Scholarship Day with the Toledo Mud Hens—100 tickets!
